Last Chance - A chance reignited
This was a story that I posted about a year ago. For several days I have been very busy and when I took some time to read some past posts of mine, I came along this story. It’s a year ago, but I am still in the same situation. But now I have realized the essence of the story. For me to stop drifting and to finally put an end to all of these..
At last, the wind blew a gentle bliss in the humid air. It seemed to be getting hot and he was beginning to sweat. The question still lingered in his mind and the weather was not helping at all. It was supposed to be cool. It was about to rain. But what enveloped him was uncertainty and, inside of him, a void wanting to be filled with the answer he was looking for.
The sound of jeepneys roared as the rocks displaced by the vehicles rubbed against each other. The road was still not developed despite the promises of the politicians a few years back. Motorcycles raced as the first droplets of rain were welcomed by the thirsty land. Students were running to get to the nearest cover under the canteen roof. He can all witness these for he was watching them all. All alone in a table with his pencil and taking down his thoughts.
Drei opened the canteen door. Looked up the gray sky and whispered to himself in a voice clear enough for the other stranded students to hear. "Eh, mas okey nang ganito keysa naman nasa klase at nakikinig sa boring na lecture." "Oo nga", answered a student in the crowd while giving Drei a high five. Perhaps that was the kind of mentality that he radiates in the student council. maybe not. Some bastard who forgot his place in the university or his primary duty as a student-leader or perhaps a student-athlete wherein, in both cases, ’student’ came first. So stupid to believe that being famous was very important.
He took his eyes off the brute while his hand continued to scribble symbols endlessly on the notebook. A faint voice filled with worry reached his ears. "Malelate na talaga ako.." He knew her but couldn’t remember her name. Lei? Lisa? Leisa? Or something like that. She’s part of the school paper, a writer who shares her ideas voicing out the good of the students. She’s a regular student in her course, someone marching at the end of the year with honors, cum laude at the very least. A person with character and someone who will be important to the society.
The subtle moment ended with a snap. The rain poured heavier like angry stones smashing on the tin roof. She got her plastic folder and got ready to run in the midst of the rain. She can’t miss her classes; not today. When she was about to take her first step, a hand grabbed her by the elbow. "Ang KJ mo naman, ‘wag mo sabihin papasok ka tlga sa klase mo? Isang absent naman diyan.." She replied, "wag mo kng itulad sa iyo Drei, bitawan mo ako please". And the rain kept pouring very hard.
He could not just sit there. He laid his pencil down and rushed towards the crowd of students. Everything happened too fast that all that was heard was a loud thud. Drei was down, managed to grin and addressed the person that hit him. "Anong eksena ba ito? Alam mong IKAW ay aKo. Kaya mo pa bang magkunwaring tulad ka nila?". He just stood there in silence. Turned his back away from the guy on the floor and faced the girl. He looked at her; tried to find something in her eyes. But he was not sure anymore. In no time, she turned away.. faded away..
He couldn’t find an answer. In a few months the year will end. For a moment he was confused but it was all clear now. Maybe this was the answer. To give himself a chance. To maybe stop existing and take a fresh start. Maybe, just maybe, he could change the ending of this chapter — the ending he always wanted..
